What is Demineralization?

Demineralization is the process of removing dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and bicarbonate from water. This process improves water quality and reduces scaling, corrosion, and operational inefficiencies in industrial equipment.

DM treatment is commonly used after pre-filtration or RO treatment to achieve higher purity levels.

How Does a DM Plant Work?

A DM plant primarily works on the principle of Ion Exchange Technology.

1. Cation Exchange Process
  • Removes positively charged ions (Cations) such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium.

  • These ions are replaced with Hydrogen ions (H+).

2. Anion Exchange Process
  • Removes negatively charged ions (Anions) such as chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and bicarbonate.

  • These ions are replaced with Hydroxide ions (OH-).

3. Formation of Pure Water
  • Hydrogen (H+) and Hydroxide (OH-) combine to form pure water (H₂O).

This process significantly reduces water conductivity and produces high-purity demineralized water.

  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

  • Electro Dialysis (ED)

  • Distillation Process
