Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) System

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is an advanced wastewater treatment solution designed to completely eliminate liquid discharge from industrial processes. The primary goal of a ZLD system is to recover and reuse maximum water while converting the remaining contaminants into solid waste for safe disposal.

ZLD technology is widely adopted in industries facing strict environmental regulations and water scarcity challenges. It ensures sustainable water management, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection.

What is Zero Liquid Discharge?

Zero Liquid Discharge is a comprehensive wastewater recovery system that treats industrial effluent in multiple stages to ensure no liquid waste leaves the facility. Instead of discharging wastewater into water bodies, the system:

  • Recovers reusable water

  • Concentrates dissolved solids

  • Converts brine into solid salts

  • Eliminates environmental pollution

ZLD systems are commonly used in industries such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, power plants, and food processing units.

Key Technologies Used in ZLD Systems

1. Multi-Effect Evaporator (MEE)

The MEE system uses multiple evaporation stages to efficiently remove water from wastewater. Heat from one stage is reused in the next stage, significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs.

Benefits of MEE:

  • Energy-efficient evaporation

  • Reduced steam consumption

  • High water recovery rate

2. Mechanical Vapor Recompressor (MVR)

MVR technology compresses vapor generated during evaporation to increase its temperature and reuse it as a heating source. This process dramatically reduces the need for fresh steam and lowers energy costs.

Benefits of MVR:

  • Extremely energy-efficient

  • Lower operational cost

  • Reduced carbon footprint

3. Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD)

The ATFD system dries concentrated brine into solid powder form. It ensures complete removal of liquid content and produces manageable solid waste.

Benefits of ATFD:

  • Efficient drying of high TDS waste

  • Compact design

  • Minimal manual handling

ZLD Process Flow

A typical Zero Liquid Discharge process includes:

1. Pre-Treatment

Removal of suspended solids, oil, grease, and adjustment of pH.

2. Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO recovers a major portion of water and produces concentrated brine.

3. Evaporation (MEE + MVR)

The brine is sent to evaporators where water is separated and recovered.

4. Crystallization

Highly concentrated solution is converted into salt crystals.

5. Drying (ATFD)

Solid salts are dried to form a final dry product for disposal or reuse.

At the end of the process, no liquid discharge remains, ensuring complete wastewater management.
